About
DJ Nerstylist:
Born in New Jersey and raised in the San Franciscio Bay Area, Justin Ner (also known as DJ Nerstylist) hails from a musical family. Nerstylist’s progression from playing the piano at age 11, to playing alto saxophone in high school, and then DJing, was the direct inspiration of his cousin (a DJ in Taiwan) and influence of his grandfather (a bandleader, composer and vocal arranger in the Philippines).
Nerstylist grew up listening to 60s and 70s rock (his father’s music) and disco and Latin jazz (his mother’s music). Inherently influenced by the music of his childhood, Nerstylist deftly weaves funk, soul, nu-jazz, broken beat, disco, dancehall and True School hip-hop to create a new dimension of eclectic soul.
A musician who is constantly broadening the scope of his sound, Nerstylist cites remixers/producers and DJs such as Gilles Peterson, DJ Spinna, Quantic (Quantic Soul Orchestra), Daz-I-Kue (Bugz in the Attic), Proof (Massive Selector), Rich Medina, Presto (Sidewok Radio) and J.Rocc (Beat Junkies) to be a small sampling of his influences. Affiliated with Sidewok Radio, and fast becoming a staple in the Bay Area scene, Nerstylist started out DJing at house parties in 1998 and then doing gigs around the Bay Area in 2003.
Seamlessly breaking into Latin rhythms, nu-jazz and broken beat, “Grown Vibes,” Nerstylist’s most recent mix, is currently featured on Groundlift Magazine. “Forward Listening,” Nerstylist’s first mix-CD, was released in May of 2006 and featured on Groundlift Magazine. Other mixes, like “Quiet Time,” “Calming Response,” and his “45Soul” series, have been circulating on the Internet and featured on various Internet radio stations. Nerstylist’s next release entitled “Beautiful Sounds Vol. 1” is due out later this year.
A
few questions for DJ Nerstylist:
1.
Tell us about some DJs you admire.
My influences change from time to time, but right now I'm feelin the sounds of Gilles Peterson, Rich Medina, Quantic, DJ Proof, DJ Concise, and those other DJ's that sound different than the average guy. I have mad respect for DJ's that push the envelope musically and aren't afraid to experiment with new sounds. DJs that impress me the most are the ones that really know their music and can rock a crowd with records I've never heard before. Also, if there's something I can learn from that DJ then you can bet that I'll have the utmost respect for that person.
2. Who are some of your favorite artists?
Well, my all-time favorite soul artist (or musical artist for that matter) would be Stevie Wonder. Current artists would include Marc Mac, Quantic, Gerardo Frisina, Daz-I-Kue, Antibalas, Elizabeth Shepherd Trio, or pretty much anyone featured on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide show. I usually stay current by staying involved with the music scene out here in San Francisco, listening to Internet radio shows, or just by listening to what other DJs are playing. I'm always hungry for new music and am constantly on the lookout for that next great track. Whenever I discover an artist out there that catches my attention, don't be surprised if you hear them on my latest mixtape.
