Algebra
A brief listen to the debut record from Algebra, the latest protégé of
former Motown CEO Kedar Massenburg, reveals a singer/songwriter with wisdom
far beyond her 23 years. "Purpose" is an apt title for the debut from
an old soul who's making some beautiful new soul music.
Algebra
hails from Atlanta, the city that continues to churn out hugely talented
and original artists. Prior to hooking up with Kedar Massenburg, Algebra
taught herself to play guitar, made the rounds at open mics around Atlanta,
and sang backgrounds for artists like Bilal and Monica.
Algebra's
debut is the first release on Massenburg's indie label, Kedar Entertainment
Group. "Purpose" contains songs which cover the standard topics of love
and heartbreak, but Algebra's interpretation of the subjects, paired with
her silky smooth vocals is what separates her from the current slew of
female soul singers. There's also an overriding message on the record
of self-acceptance and the importance of presenting yourself to the world
unapologetically. This message comes through loud and clear on "Nothing
to Prove" as Algebra tells us politely, yet confidently just who and how
she is. Other notable tracks on the record include the blissful, love
struck tracks "U Do It For Me" and "Some Kinda Wonderful," the Cinderella
with a twist song "Happy After," and the spellbinding slow cuts, "What
Happened" and "Come Back."
Algebra spoke recently about her debut record, her varied experiences
touring with Kem and Keyshia Cole, and being put on by Kedar.
