Amel Larrieux
With
a voice too versatile and a style too varied to be bound by a single music
genre, Amel Larrieux creates music that soothes your soul, lifts your
spirits, and makes you want to be a better person.
Already a seasoned songwriter by the time she began winning over R&B/soul
fans worldwide as part of the 90s duo, Groove Theory, Amel set out on
her own in the mid-90s and released the impressive debut, "Infinite Possibilities,"
in 2000.
Although she could've easily ridden the neo-soul wave she helped create
with the Groove Theory and Infinite Possibilities records, Amel opted
to do a second record that was decidedly different from the first. "Bravebird"
was released in 2004 on her own label, Bliss Life Records.
Amel's back with her third solo project, "Morning." This record shows
once again, her innate ability to sing in any style, as her voice can
wrap around a folk, Caribbean, or jazz melody as beautifully as it lifts
a soul groove. In addition to being a versatile and completely unique
vocalist, Amel's reputation as one of the best songwriters of her generation
is further cemented with the new 10-song set that makes up "Morning."
Whether her songs examine the challenges and joys of relationships, or
the struggles facing African Americans, Amel's writing is both compassionate
and courageous. Her husband and primary collaborator, Laru Larrieux, is
a talented musician, producer, and songwriter, and always knows just what
to provide musically to allow Amel's voice to shine on each track.
Highlights of "Morning" include the sassy, midtempo gem, "Earn My Affections,"
the blazing Brazilian track "Trouble," the piercing and poignant cut "Magic,"
and the perfectly infectious groove, "Weary."
Amel
spoke recently about her new record, the stories behind some of the songs,
and her devoted community of online supporters, known as the Bravebirds.
