Donnie

There are great soul singers, and then there's Donnie. The velvet-voiced Southerner first caught our attention in 2003 with the instant classic debut, "The Colored Section." Immediately comparisons were made to legendary artists like Stevie, Marvin, and the other Donny. And it's no wonder. "The Colored Section" remains an enduring masterpiece of lyrical genius and vocal perfection.

Donnie has signed with the indie label, Soul Thought Records and he makes a triumphant return with his second album, “The Daily News.” On the new record, Donnie continues his collaboration with producer Steve “the Scotsman” Harvey, the talented visionary who produced his magnificent debut.

Like “The Colored Section,” “The Daily News” is full of the socially conscious writing and rich vocals for which Donnie is known. The album deals with topics ranging from racism, unemployment, homophobia, to child molestation, and Donnie’s energy and delivery always convey a great sense of urgency about the topic at hand. Donnie’s clearly trying to educate and call folks to action with his music, but he manages to both inspire and entertain during his songs, or “sermons.” Highlights of “The Daily News” include the Hurricane Katrina-inspired “Impatient People,” the insightful midtempo tracks “Classifieds” and “Over the Counter Culture,” and the irresistible, inspiring first single, “If I Were You.”

Last year, Donnie spoke to us about his first album "The Colored Section," and this month, he talks about his new album, his new outlook, and more.
