Dwele

By perfectly blending head-bopping hooks, live instruments, and silky-smooth vocals, Dwele has developed the perfect recipe for melodic, sexy soul.

Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, the singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist began as an emcee and developed an underground following with his 1998 independent release, "Rize." Dwele’s vocals on songs by Bahamadia, Recloose, and Slum Village's 2002 hit “Tainted” got him wider recognition, and ultimately led to his 2003 Virgin Records debut, "Subject," which included unforgettable grooves like "Find A Way, "Hold On," and "Truth."

 

Dwele's second record, “Some Kinda” came in 2005, and gave us more reasons to love his ability to fuse soul, jazz, and hip hop to create more memorable music. In addition to the tragically beautiful title track, Dwele's sophomore release includes the sentimental slow cut, "Weekend Love," the steaming hot joint, "Lay It Down," and the irresistible Mike City-produced track “I Think I Love You.”

Stax Records' forthcoming Maurice White tribute CD,"Interpretations" includes a hand-clapping, horn-laden cover of "That's the Way of the World" by Dwele, and his contemporary meets classical version is sure to be a favorite of the 10-song set.



Dwele spoke recently about recording an Earth, Wind, & Fire classic, his feelings about the indie soul movement, and turning his greatest tragedy into a musical masterpiece.
