Ledisi

In terms of sheer vocal power and explosive live performances, you can’t get much better than singer/songwriter Ledisi, a sensational artist known worldwide for her singing, scatting, and dynamite shows.

LedisiThe New Orleans native, whose parents are both singers, spent some of her childhood in New Orleans, but later moved to Oakland, California and began making a name for herself as a singer and performer. During the 1990s, she spent a number of years performing in the popular San Francisco-based cabaret show, Beach Blanket Babylon, and later formed the band Anibade with fellow artist and creative partner Sundra “Sun” Manning.

In the late 90s, Ledisi and Sundra started their own independent label, LeSun Music and released two critically acclaimed records, “Soulsinger” in 2000, and “Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue” in 2003. Both CDs are two of the hardest to find independent albums and each has sold for up to $180 a copy on the Internet. “Soulsinger” was originally released in 2000, and then was redistributed by Tommy Boy Records in 2004. “Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue” received a 2003 California Music Award for Outstanding Jazz Album.

In 2005, Ledisi provided an outstanding cover of “My Sensitivity (Gets In The Way)” on the Grammy-nominated Luther Vandross tribute album, “Forever For Always For Luther,” the forthcoming Maurice White tribute CD,"Interpretations" includes her excellent cover of "Devotion."

Last year, Ledisi signed with the jazz label, Verve Music Group, and her first release with Verve is planned for release this Summer.

Ledisi spoke recently about her new CD, recording an Earth, Wind, & Fire classic, and the struggles and joys of being an independent artist.
