Mikelyn Roderick

Although singer/songwriter Mikelyn Roderick just released her debut CD, “Copasetic Is,” she’s hardly a newcomer to the music business. She’s actually a 24-year veteran of the music industry, and one listen to her exceptional debut reveals that time has obviously agreed with Mikelyn. “Copasetic Is” contains elements of soul, jazz, and blues, and the overall experience is akin to chilling out in a cool little lounge, vibing to some truly delicious music. Add Rahsaan Patterson’s heavenly harmonies all over the project, and you’ve got yourself one of the best CDs of 2007.

Originally from Cape Verde, a chain of islands off the western coast of Africa, Mikelyn is currently based in the Cape Cod area of Massachusetts. She first made a name for herself as a member of the 80s R&B group By All Means, who recorded three albums for Island Records and Motown Records. Later, she did session work for artists like Barry White, Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, Maxwell, Earth, Wind & Fire and Rahsaan Patterson, with whom she co-wrote a number of songs, including "Back To The World" (a hit single for Tevin Campbell) and Rahsaan’s songs "So Hot" and "Straighten It Out.” Mikelyn’s voice has also lifted many a commercial jingle over the years.

Mikelyn’s debut “Copasetic Is” was released in February on UK label Dome Records, and the album provides the perfect backdrop for a lazy afternoon, or steamy night. Highlights of the eleven song set include the hot midtempo groove “Slippin’” featuring Rahsaan Patterson, the ridiculously good cover of Stevie Wonder’s “If You Really Love Me” (also featuring Rahsaan Patterson), the bluesy “Last Winter,” the funky good “Morning Light,” and the sublime Bossa Nova number, “Easy.”

Mikelyn spoke recently about her debut CD, her longtime friendship with Rahsaan Patterson, and two legendary artists who’ve shaped her musically.
