Myoshi

One of the best debut CDs of 2007 has to be Myoshi Marilla’s “The EP,” a five-song set of instrument-laden, classic-meets-modern music, perfectly complimented by Myoshi’s lush, jazzy vocals.

MyoshiThe New York-based singer/songwriter’s entire CD was recorded live, which accounts for its wonderfully classic, big band sound. The sweetly sentimental grooves “Smile” and “Hello” are sure to be favorites on the disc, while the rocking energy and emotion of “How Does It Feel” and bare bliss of “Angel” show Myoshi’s versatility and depth as an artist.

Although she’s been singing professionally since she was a teenager and has performed all over the world, many folks know Myoshi as the pretty, personable co-host of the “The BETJ List” on the BETJ Channel, a weekly 2-hour music video and lifestyle countdown that ran for two seasons. “The BETJ List” was quite popular among soul music fans, in part because of the show’s independent artist spotlight, but also because of Myoshi’s on-air presence and natural chemistry with co-host Maven Huffman. In fact, when word got out late last year on websites like MySpace that the show was in danger of being cancelled, Myoshi was instrumental in encouraging viewers to email the show’s producers to save the show. An outpouring of viewer support followed, and while the show was ultimately cancelled in January, Myoshi’s popularity as a television personality and artist continues to increase.

In addition to The BETJ List, Myoshi’s television resume lists appearances on commercials, the Court TV show “Parco, P.I.,” and a milk promotion on the Oxygen Channel.

Myoshi spoke recently about her debut CD, her television work, and what types of things her dream career might include.
