Omar
If you know anything about UK soul, then you know all about Omar. Regarded
by many as the "Godfather of British soul," Omar has built a worldwide
following with his signature sound and exciting live performances. His
new record, "Sing If You Want It" proves that 16 years after his solo
debut, Omar is not just the best British soul artist, but one of the best
soul artists, period.
In the time since his last record, 2000's "Best By Far," Omar built his
own recording studio, started his own record label, changed management,
and did a huge number of live shows all over the world. And he somehow
found the time to record his sixth record, which happens to be outstanding.
Omar's new record is a fine brew of funky, modern-yet-timeless melodies
and rhythms, and honest songwriting, all laced with Omar's rich vocals.
In addition to plenty of live instruments, Omar's brother, Scratch Professer,
adds some nice production to the mix. Then there are the featured artists,
which include Stevie Wonder, Angie Stone, and Common, just to name a few.
And as much as the collaborations add to the record, Omar's solo tracks
are just as impressive. As with his earlier records, "Sing (If You Want
It)" has an authenticity and accessibility that's sure to make it universally
appealing. Highlights of the 14-song set include the sing-along title
track, the Stevie Wonder collaboration, "Feeling You," the mid-tempo tunes,
"Kiss It Right" and "Your Mess," the head-nodder "I Want It," and the
horn-heavy, jazzy gem, "Ghana Emotion."
Omar spoke recently about where he is artistically and professionally,
his new music, and some of his dream collaborations, realized and otherwise.
