PJ Morton

A list of the best emerging artists on the soul music scene today would be incomplete without including PJ Morton, a singer, songwriter and musician who's responsible for one of the best debut records in recent years.

Originally from New Orleans, PJ is the son of renowned Baptist minister, gospel singer, and author Paul Morton, Sr., so it comes as no surprise that PJ's musically rich heritage led him to a career in music. Now based in Atlanta, some folks may remember PJ as the frontman of the group Freestyle Nation, best known for their impressive 2002 release "Freeversation." As a songwriter, PJ's provided songs for several notable artists, including India.Arie, Jagged Edge, Monica, and Heather Headley.

PJ released his outstanding solo debut entitled "Emotions" in 2005. The record was recently repackaged and re-released with two new songs, creating even more buzz about this talented young artist. PJ's solid vocals and songwriting are some of the best out there, but what's sure to strike listeners most about "Emotions" is the live music throughout the record.

In addition to PJ playing keys on every song like nobody's business, guitars, trumpets, trombones, saxophones, and violins can also be heard. This combined with PJ's musical influences, which range from gospel to soul to rock to jazz, make for a fantastic variety of music. From the acoustic guitar on "My Superstar" and "Jiborish" to the violins and piano on "Fly Away," to the Latin horns and rhythms on "I Think I'm Falling," "Emotions" takes listeners on a musical journey they'll want to experience over and over.

PJ spoke recently about his debut record, playing with Eric Roberson and Frank McComb for the Kings of Underground Soul tour, and what he's got coming up musically.
