Ra-Re Valverde

Words like eclectic and progressive come to mind when describing “A Beautiful Mess,” the stunning debut by singer/songwriter Ra-Re Valverde. But even impressive adjectives like those seem an inadequate way to express the sheer originality of Ra-Re’s sound.

A native of New York and graduate of the esteemed Berklee College of Music, Ra-Re has enjoyed a successful career for a number of years singing backgrounds for artists like Lalah Hathaway, Rahsaan Patterson, and Jill Scott. She’s also had success as a songwriter, having co-written several songs on Trina Broussard’s critically acclaimed 2004 release “Same Girl.”

On “A Beautiful Mess,” Ra-Re covers the joys and struggles of love and life, with particular emphasis given to the unique challenges of artists. From the inspiring anthem “Outside The Box” to the heartfelt Peter Hadar duet “Love Will,” Ra-Re’s rich vocals and impassioned lyrics make for a debut that gets better with repeated listens.

Ra-Re spoke recently about her debut CD, her growth as an artist and a person, and what she’s learned from working with some of the most respected artists in the soul game.
